How does the CSWCD role fit in, coordinate with any of the water management districts, i.e SWFWMD
[Southwest Florida Water Management District], [South Florida Water Management District].
● What is the total budget?
● What are other funding sources rec’d?
● Do other agencies, City of Punta Gorda, etc. contribute.
● What specific operating efforts, expenses would the $10k funds be used for?
● The County does not normally provide funds to special districts. Has the CCSWCD rec’d funds in the past
from our county or other gov’t agencies?
● From a timing perspective, if there is funding consideration by the County, we would look to include it as
part of the upcoming budget process for the Oct 1, 2023 budget (FY23/24).
Mission
Providing leadership in helping people achieve success through conserving, improving and sustaining natural
resources and the environment of Charlotte County, Florida.
Vision
The Charlotte Soil and Water Conservation District will be recognized throughout the County as a leading
resource partner with regards to all soil and water conservation projects, concerns, and decisions made with in
our region.
Water
Water conservation includes all the policies, strategies and activities made to sustainably manage the natural
resource fresh water, to protect the water environment, and to meet the current and future human demand.
Soil
Soil Conservation is the name given to techniques aimed at preserving the soil. Soil loss and loss of soil fertility
can be traced back to a number of causes including over-use, erosion, salinization and chemical contamination.
Wildlife
Healthy soil and water habitats generate many benefits for wildlife. Natural processes create healthy soil, clean
and abundant water, fertile crops, and protection from flooding and climate extremes. Wildlife and nature offers
cultural and spiritual benefits, recreational opportunities and an endless source of beauty.
Statement of Function
The Charlotte Soil and Water Conservation District was organized for the purpose of developing a program of
management and conservation of the soil, water and related natural resources of the County, and to promote and
encourage the voluntary implementation of conservation practices on privately owned land. The Charlotte Soil
and Water Conservation District strives to accomplish one of the fundamental roles for the board of supervisors.
Our role is to bring together, at the local level, all interested and affected parties, along with the support
organizations charged with providing technical and administrative assistance, to develop and implement a plan to
address resource concerns. Through a locally led consensus process, priorities are determined for conservation
programs. The partners then work to implement programs that provide assistance to landowners, agricultural
producers, and local residents. The District works in cooperation with the Florida Department of Agriculture and
Consumer Services (FDACS) and the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation
Service (USDA/NRCS)
Creation
Creation of the Charlotte Soil & Water Conservation District is authorized by the Soil and Water Conservation
Law, Chapter 582, enacted by the State legislature in 1944.
